A man whom police say stole a car last month returned to the scene of the crime Saturday. He stole a wallet from a car before burglarizing a church, then forged a check taken during the crimes and tried to cash it, said Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams.
Lacurtis D. Powell, 27, Turner Street, took a vehicle from SmithCo on MLK Boulevard May 26, he said.
Police later recovered the car, locked, said Det. Ken Smith.
Investigators connected Powell to the motor vehicle theft because he left evidence behind when he burglarized the Turning Point Tabernacle Church on Zetterower Avenue Saturday, he said.
Powell returned to SmithCo Saturday and broke into a car, stealing a wallet, he said. Then, he went to the church and stole "some money and clothing."
Powell left the stolen wallet, as well as the stolen car's keys, behind at the church before taking a check he had also stolen to Sea Island Bank's Lovett Street branch, Williams said.
Bank officials were suspicious and called police. Advanced Patrol Officer Richard Beckum responded and detained Powell before calling Scott to investigate, he said.
Beckum and Advanced Patrol Officer Justin Gawthrop assisted Scott in investigating the entering auto, church burglary and check forgery, gathering evidence connecting Powell to all three incidents as well as the May 26 motor vehicle theft, he said.
Powell was arrested on charges of vandalism to a place of worship, first degree forgery (felony), entering auto, burglary, marijuana possession, and theft by taking motor vehicle, he said.
Powell was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remained Monday. He has a $10,000 property bond, according to jail records.
