Statesboro firefighters offer cookout, fun day

Statesboro Fire Chief Tim Grams hopes to meet a number of “neighbors” Saturday by hosting a community cook-out and inviting the public to get to know their fire department better.The Statesboro Fire Department plans the cook-out Saturday, Sept. 12, in honor of the grand opening of the newly-renovated Fire Station One at 24 West Grady Street, across from the Statesboro Police Department,.Visitors will enjoy tours of the improved and enlarged facility, as well as a host of other activities, he said.A post on the SFD Facebook page describes the event as “a fun-filled and informative trip through the new fire station and administration offices. In addition to station tours and the chance to see the trucks and tools that are used by firefighters; there will be displays and information on fire safety, emergency preparedness, and child safety seat checks.”Children will be able to "learn what to do if there is a fire in their home; as well as try on firefighter turnout gear, advance a hose line (and spray water!), meet Blaze the fire dog, and more," according to the post.Firefighters will serve hotdogs, chips, and drinks.An official ribbon cutting will be held at 10 a.m., but the event begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m., he said.The public event is being held in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the local fire department and the public, Grams said. “It’s a community function where we can all get together and get to know each other.
