Faculty and students at Sallie Zetterower Elementary were evacuated at about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday after smoke was seen in a hallway, according to the Bulloch County school system.

"The Statesboro Fire Department responded to an electrical issue on the Swamp Hall at Sallie Z. at approximately 3:15 p.m.," said Hayley Greene, the school district's public relations and marketing specialist. "There were no injuries and no damage to any surrounding equipment. No fire was found, however smoke was evident in the hallway."

Faculty and students followed fire drill procedures to evacuate the building and returned after the fire department gave the all-clear about 45 minutes later.

"The school has had several fire drills this school year, which helped prepare students and faculty for emergency situations," Greene said.

Classes had dismissed for the day, but the school's after-care program, which is overseen by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department, was in session.

Greene said Recreation Department staff are trained on fire procedures at all of the district's schools.
