A man was shot and killed early Sunday morning at a Claxton club where a private youth program was being held, said Evans County Sheriff Randall Tippins. The Evans County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are following the case and pursuing warrants for a suspect.

Steven Moore, 22, was shot “more than once” with a small caliber handgun while attending a youth program at The Gladiator Club on Oxendine Drive in Claxton, he said.

Evans County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene around 12:20 a.m. Sunday and found Moore suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, he said. Moore was taken to Evans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Tippins, sheriff’s investigators and special agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 5 Office in Statesboro continued Monday to question witnesses and pursue leads, and Tippins said he expects warrants to be issued soon for the suspect’s arrest. He did not identify the suspect, except to say he is a black male.

Claxton High School authorities issued an announcement to parents Sunday via a recorded phone call stating counseling will be available for students. Tippins said while Moore was an adult, several high school students were present during the “youth gathering” at The Gladiator and witnessed the shooting. Some students there were related to Moore as well, he said, adding that Pineland Mental Health reached out to offer counseling at the school.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Region 5 GBI Office at (912) 871-1121 or Evans County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 739-1611.
