A $1,500 reward is being offered by the Statesboro Police Department for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of a suspect responsible for shooting and killing a Savannah man Wednesday at Campus Crossings Apartments in Statesboro.

Thursday, Statesboro police identified the murder victim as Vernon Lamont Hunter, 24, of Savannah.

After hearing shots fired around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers near the Lanier Drive apartment complex found Hunter with a gunshot wound, said Statesboro Police Deputy Chief Rob Bryan, interim chief.

Investigators could not immediately identify Hunter Wednesday, but further investigation revealed his identity, Bryan said.

At the scene early Wednesday morning, Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies, assisting with the investigation, located three shell casings, according to sheriff’s incident reports. Georgia Southern University police also assisted in the response.

Upon finding Hunter, officers immediately called Bulloch County EMS to the scene. Hunter was transported to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center by Bulloch County EMS where he later died from the gunshot, Bryan said.

Police would not release specific information about Hunter’s injuries, citing the ongoing investigation. Detective Kevin Weatherly is leading the investigation.

The department is offering the $1,500 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the offender in this case, Bryan said.
