A woman who claimed to be dying of cancer was caught shoplifting a pair of jeans Tuesday, according to Statesboro Police reports.
Employees of Dollar General on Brannen Street saw a 51-year-old woman enter the store bathroom with a $10 pair of jeans. When she exited, she did not appear to have the blue jeans with her, reports stated.
When store employees questioned the woman, she admitted having put the pair of jeans on,  then donned her own clothing over them, a store employee told police.
She said "she needed a pair of jeans so she was going to steal them," a witness was quoted as saying in the report.
When the store employees detained the offender and called police, the woman said she was ill, suffering from terminal cancer, and needed medical treatment, reports stated.
Emergency  medical technicians responding to the scene took routine medical tests and learned the woman suffered from "extremely high blood pressure," according to the reporting officer.
The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.
In consideration of her medical condition, police released the suspect with a citation, charging her with theft by shoplifting, reports said.
The jeans were returned to Dollar General employees.
