Portal races to save historical sites
Heritage Society launches series of fundraisers
041615 PORTAL DRUG STORE 06
The old Portal Drug Store is one of the buildings the Portal Heritage Society is trying to save through a series of fundraisers.
With historic buildings and sites at risk and in need of repair, the Portal Heritage Society is seeking ways to raise money and breathe new life into the town’s annual Catface Country Turpentine Festival. An upcoming softball tournament, followed by a child’s carnival and a “water day,” will hopefully be the beginning of a string of fun, lucrative events intended to fund repairs to the old Stewart’s drug store, the E.C. Carter turpentine still and other historic sites, said Carol Waters, secretary for the heritage society. Set for Saturday, April 25, the softball tournament will be held at the Reidsville Recreational Facility.
