A man was struck and killed early Saturday morning when he walked into the path of traffic.
Witnesses told police they saw Antonio Giron Vasquez, 24, Outland Street, walk into the path of a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Veteran's Memorial Parkway, near Old Register Road, around 1:48 a.m. Saturday, said Statesboro Police Chief Stan York.
The driver of  the Cherokee was traveling west when Vasquez walked into the roadway. After striking the man, the driver stopped the vehicle on the side of  the road.
Seconds later, Vasquez , lying in the roadway, was struck a second time by a 1993 Mazda Millenia, traveling in the same direction.
Statesboro Police responded and conducted an on-scene investigation, including speaking to a witness who saw the first vehicle strike Vasquez. Bulloch County EMS also responded, and contacted Bulloch County coroner Jake Futch, who pronounced Vasquez dead at the scene.
Futch sent Vasquez' body to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for an autopsy, but "Preliminary investigation revealed (Vasquez) died from severe trauma sustained during the initial collision," York said.
No charges were filed, he said. The accident remains under investigation.
