Augusta man charged with Feb. Campus Crossings killing

A man charged with shooting two men - killing one and injuring the other - at a Statesboro apartment in February entered a plea of not guilty Monday during a plea calendar hearing.

Steven Lachaz Williams, 21, of Augusta, is charged with murder and aggravated assault in the Feb. 27 shooting death of Mikeal Hamilton, 24, of Norcross, as well as the injury by shooting of Ian Lamar Rumph, 24, of Lanier Drive.

Williams was represented Monday by public defender Steven Yekel.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Feb. 27, Statesboro police responded to the shooting at Campus Crossings on Lanier Drive, where officers located the victims. Hamilton was dead at the scene, and Rumph was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

Two others were charged in the incident as well: Joseph Miles, 18, and Malik Rashad Freeman, 19, both of Lanier Drive, were charged with misdemeanor obstruction and making false statements, a felony.

After court Monday, Williams was returned to the Bulloch County Jail to await further court hearings.
