Statesboro Police are investigating a Tuesday night shooting that put one man in the hospital and another in jail.
Willie Jamaal White, 17, East Jones Avenue, is charged with aggravated assault and participation in criminal street gang activity after the shooting, which took place around 7:45 p.m. near Little Lotts Creek Apartments, said Statesboro Police Chief Stan York.
However, police are unsure if White is the one who fired the gun, he said.
After responding to reports of gunshots fired near Little Lotts Creek Apartments on East Jones, officers searched the area for victims and witnesses. They were told a 21-year-old man, Marcus Leon White, had been taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his upper body, York said. The victim was stabilized at East Georgia and transferred to Memorial Hospital in Savannah.
Police did not say whether Marcus White was related to the offender, and did not release additional information about his condition or wounds.
Officers also discovered another man, 18-year-old Theo Lanier III, was struck with a bottle during an altercation with Willie White, suffering lacerations.
According to police incident reports, Willie White was charged earlier Tuesday with criminal trespass for throwing a glass bottle at a passing car, shattering its rear window.
While White remains in jail, "Investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and the identity of the actual person shooting the gun is unknown at this time," York said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Tommy Brown, or any detective in the Statesboro Police Criminal Investigations Division, at 764-1542 or 764-9911. All information will be held in strict confidence, police said.
