Statesboro police are investigating an attack Saturday afternoon that sent the victim to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

The 59-year-old man did not know his attacker, said Madison Warren, Statesboro Police Community Information Specialist.

However, the unidentified assailant reportedly attacked the man, striking him “several times with a weapon,” because the offender suspected the victim of “messing with his girlfriend,” she said.

The attack occurred in the street near Park Place Apartments of Lanier Drive around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The weapon was not a gun or knife, but Warren withheld information on the type of weapon that was used, citing the investigation’s “ongoing” status as the reason to limit details of the case.

The victim was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment of “non life-threatening” injuries, she said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Statesboro Police at (912) 764-9911.
