A missing persons call from a Florida resident Tuesday led Statesboro police to arrest a man on rape charges.

Joe Amos Saxton, 45, Gadson Morris Road, Allendale, SC, was apprehended and taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he is held without bond as he awaits possible further charges, said Madison Brides, Statesboro Police Department public information specialist.

Statesboro police officers received a call Tuesday night around 8:30 p.m. from a Jacksonville, Fla. resident, concerned about a missing person. The caller had been contacted by the victim, a woman in her early 30’s, whom the caller knew, and who said she was being held against her will, Bridges said.

As detectives spoke with the caller, the victim escaped and ran to a business near the Northside Drive East apartment where she had reportedly been held captive. Officers met with the victim and learned where Saxton had allegedly been holding her against her will. The victim told police she had been raped, Bridges said.

Officers located Saxton and took him into custody while the victim was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The woman told police two men, one of whom was Saxton, forced her into a vehicle with them in Jacksonville, brought her to Statesboro and held her captive in the Northside Drive East apartment, she said. The second man was not identified in reports, and Bridges said any charges stemming from the initial abduction would come from Jacksonville authorities.

The victim told police she did not know Saxton or the other man.
