A man who was stopped for a minor traffic offense ended up with more serious charges after he got into a scuffle with a deputy, according to the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy 1st Class Randall Norman stopped a vehicle at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on Kyle Sorrell Road at Newton's Mobile Home Park for a minor traffic offense, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said in a Wednesday news release.

Norman made contact with the driver, later identified as Kenneth Steven Chapman, 21, of Grant Street in Garden City, and Chapman gave a false name, the release says.
After obtaining Chapman's true identity, Norman found that the suspect was wanted in Effingham County, Anderson said.

As Norman attempted to take Chapman into custody, Chapman physically resisted, the release says.

The two struggled until other deputies could reach the scene, summoned by a call for help from Norman, Anderson said.

Chapman was taken into custody and transported to the Bulloch County Jail. Norman sustained a minor injury to his knee during the altercation, the release says.
Chapman is charged with felony obstruction of an officer, misdemeanor obstruction, simple battery on an officer, giving false identification, disorderly conduct, battery, seatbelt violation and an outstanding Effingham County warrant. He has no bond.
