Which pneumonia vaccine is right for you?
McCook'S LO Vaccines

When it comes to protecting yourself against pneumonia, knowing which vaccine you need isn't always straightforward. Your age, medical history and previous vaccinations all play a role in determining the best option.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pneumococcal vaccines help protect against infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. These infections can lead to pneumonia, bloodstream infections and meningitis, some of which can be life-threatening.

The CDC recommends pneumococcal vaccination for all adults 50 and older who have never received the vaccine — a change from the previous recommendation beginning at age 65. Adults ages 19–49 with certain risk factors, including diabetes, chronic heart or lung disease, weakened immune systems or cigarette smoking, may also need vaccination.

Several pneumococcal vaccines are available, including Prevnar 20 (PCV20) and Capvaxive (PCV21). Each protects against different strains of pneumococcal bacteria, and the appropriate choice depends on a person's age, medical history and previous vaccinations. For many adults who have not previously received a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, a single dose of either PCV20 or PCV21 completes the recommended vaccination series.

For people who have received a pneumonia vaccine in the past, determining whether another dose is necessary can be more complicated. The type of vaccine previously administered and the time since vaccination can affect current recommendations.

Pneumonia vaccinations are available at McCook's Pharmacy, where pharmacists are available to review customers' vaccination histories, explain current recommendations and help them determine which vaccine best suits their individual needs.
