For the fourth consecutive year, the Statesboro Herald was named the best small daily newspaper in Georgia during the Georgia Press Association’s annual awards banquet Friday in Jekyll Island.
The Herald earned a first place in the General Excellence category of the 2013 Better Newspaper Contest in Division D for daily papers with 8,000 and under circulation. The annual contest is run by the Georgia Press Association, which represents 34 daily and 120 weekly newspapers in the state. The Herald also won first place in General Excellence in 2004, 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
The Herald earned 15 awards in the contest, including four first-place, seven second-place and four third-place honors for work that was published in 2012. The paper, which is owned by Savannah-based Morris Multimedia Inc., captured more awards than any other of the 12 papers in Division D.
“To be recognized as the best is a testament to the hard work of the entire staff,” said James Healy, the operations manager for the Herald. “I congratulate our staff for putting together such a quality product for our readers.”
Photographer Scott Bryant won four awards, including two first places. His photo of a dog jumping during the DockDogs event earned first in the Feature Photograph category. His series of photos from the Kiwanis Club Rodeo was named first for Best Photo Essay.
He also earned second places for a Spot News Photo and a Feature Photograph.
Reporter Holli Deal Bragg won three awards — a second place for Hard News Writing and third place for both Feature Writing and Investigative Reporting. She shared the investigative award with fellow reporter Jeff Harrison.
Harrison also won a second-place award for Education Coverage.
Herald business editor Jan Moore earned a third place for Business Coverage.
In awards given to the newspaper as a whole, the Herald earned the following:
First place
General Excellence
Editorial Writing – For editorials written about the Bulloch County school system and the transportation SPLOST vote.
Second place
Lifestyles Section – For sections edited by Casey Stoddard and Linsay Cheney.
Local News Coverage – For coverage offered by the entire Herald staff.
Headline Writing – For headlines written by James Healy, Eddie Ledbetter and Matt Yogus.
Third place

Other Morris Multimedia newspapers also were recognized for their work in 2012. In Division C for papers of circulation between 8,000 and 15,000, the Forsyth County News won second place General Excellence and 14 total awards. In Division E for all tri-weekly and bi-weekly papers, the Covington News won second place General Excellence and 11 total awards.
