Special agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are looking into the death of an inmate at the Bulloch County Jail Thursday evening, according to a release from Jared Akins, chief deputy with the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office.
About 6:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies working in the Jail Division of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office were conducting a routine inmate count when they found an inmate unresponsive in a single person cell.
Deputies followed jail protocol and summoned medical assistance while securing the scene, according to the release. The inmate was pronounced dead a short time later.
Per policy in such situations, GBI agents are conducting the investigation.
Akins said in the release that the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin. An autopsy is scheduled at the GBI's Coastal Crime Lab Friday.
