An old tradition was resurrected last weekend at Southeast Bulloch High School.
New Agricultural Science teacher and SEB graduate Susannah Lanier helped organize and stage the 2010 Bulloch County Livestock Expo. The event was the first event held at the school's newest building, the John F. Spence Multi-Purpose Agricultural Facility. The event was sponsored by SEB’s FFA Chapter.
According to Lanier, the Bulloch County Young Farmers Association used to hold an agricultural show in Brooklet prior to the annual Georgia National Junior Livestock Show held in Perry in the spring where all the 4-H and FFA students now show their animals.
During the March 13 show, several kinds of livestock were entered in the event: goats, lambs, hogs, and heifers, and they were being judged in two separate groups. The market animals were grouped by their overall weight, while the breeding animals were grouped by their date of birth.
The students were judged in two areas: first, Showmanship, in which the handler shows off their knowledge of their animal and their skills in handling it; and secondly, in Class, where the animal itself is judged on fitness, attractiveness to market and characteristics.
There were plaques awarded for the Grand and Reserve Champions.
