(Each Tuesday though Saturday, Statesboro Herald correspondent Roger Allen will write about newsmakers on Phil Boyum's “Mornings unPHILtered” Web audio and radio program.)

Wednesday's guests on “Mornings unPHILtered” were Allen Muldrew, downtown Statesboro Development Authority director, and Bob Olliff, executive director of the United Way of Bulloch County.
Muldrew and Oliff told show host Phil Boyum that this Friday the United Way will kick off its annual campaign during the “First Friday” event downtown at 5:30 p.m. Olliff said that the agencies funded by United Way will have information booths set up around the Courthouse Square.
As part of First Friday, local merchants are participating in a contest, in which people will be given a form on which they will have to answer questions about the United Way. The “Fun Facts” question and answer sheets will be available at the Downtown Development table on the square, along with coupons for free hot dogs and drinks. Answers can be found only by going into participating merchants stores. Once completed, the completed forms which are turned in will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
The United Way of Bulloch County supports 18 agencies, which range from the “First Steps” program, that deals with newborn infants, to the Senior Citizens meals programs. They also support the Statesboro Food Bank and other similar agencies that serve people of all ages and incomes. According to an article in this morning's Statesboro Herald, all charitable agencies are experiencing downfalls in their receipts, largely caused by people losing jobs or finding their incomes greatly reduced.
Typically, the United Way kick-off is held in the fall, which allows corporations to set up employee payroll deduction. Olliff said that United Way representatives will be visiting local business in person in order to get even more Bulloch Countians to support the efforts. The campaign usually lasts about 10 weeks, so the United Way hopes to have a pretty good idea of the funds that will be available to distribute to agencies by the new year.
Olliff said when people donate to the United Way, donors can designate their money to go only to specific agencies. Ninety-nine percent of the money donated to Bulloch County United Way strays here, with only 1 percent going to the United Way of America. The Statesboro United Way office is located at 515 Denmark.
“Mornings unPHILtered” airs live Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on statesboroherald.com and also simulcast on WWNS-AM 1240 on the radio.
