Ronnie Douberly, 53, of Leefield, recounts how he and his wife, Xochith, were married at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds 10 years ago. They met during the fair circuit while Ronnie worked assembling rides and Xochith worked at a food vendor. We had probably 35 of the Mexican workers that came over (to the ceremony.) They were all from the same city that we live at, so we were all friends and knew each other. The guy she worked for, Mel, hes the one that gave her away at the (wedding) ceremony, Douberly said. - photo by JULIA FECHTER/Herald Intern
Ten years ago, during fair week in Statesboro, something special happened at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair. Late one morning, before lunch, amid the stilled rides, the colorful stuffed animal prizes, and empty food booths, two people vowed to love one another forever. They both were carnival workers employed by Amusements of America, which owns the midway featured each year at the seven-county agricultural fair.
