A Macon man was killed Thursday when a van in which he was a passenger was struck by an 18-wheeler.
Georgia State Troopers responded to an eight-vehicle pile-up around 7:19 Thursday on Interstate 16 near Red Hill Church Road, according to reports. The accident followed on the heels of another crash involving an 18-wheeler and a van, which occurred around 6:35 p.m., about two miles down the road from the second accident.
The first crash, between a 1999 Volvo tractor driven by Victor Sikes, 47, Packinghouse Road and a 1994 Dodge Ram van driven by Richard Fitzgerald, 70, Savannah, resulted in visible injuries to both drivers, and Sikes was found to be responsible for the wreck due to mechanical failure, reports stated.
The second accident occurred when Raymond Broughton, 32, Clarkston, driving a 2004 Freightliner, struck a 2004 Nissan Quest driven by Rebecca Shiver, 53, Twin Oak Drive, Macon, reports said.
The impact resulted in a tangle involving eight vehicles, said GSP Trooper John Priest.
Thomas Williams, 85, Zebulon Road, Macon, who was a passenger in Shiver's vehicle, was killed upon impact, he said.
Charges of following too closely are pending against Broughton, reports stated. The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. The reports are incomplete and did not list details of injuries sustained by the occupants of the other six vehicles involved.
