A woman drove through Statesboro’s Jersey Mike’s restaurant Wednesday afternoon, entering through the front and exiting the side of the building.

No one was seriously injured, according to Statesboro Herald business editor DeWayne Grice, who took video of the aftermath that can be viewed on the Statesboro Herald’s Facebook page.

Statesboro Police reports were not immediately available before press time Wednesday, but SPD dispatchers said the call came in just before 4 p.m.

Phone calls to Jersey Mike’s Statesboro store were not answered Wednesday evening.

Grice said the restaurant was not very busy when the elderly driver crashed through. Store employees told him the woman, who was parked in a parking space, entered her car, started the engine, and “gunned it”, leaving skid marks as she plowed through glass doors, walls, tables and chairs.

Employees told Grice EMS responded and treated at least one person at the scene who reportedly suffered minor injuries due to his standing at a drink station during the ordeal.

Cleanup and repair efforts were underway before 5 p.m., according to Statesboro Herald photographer Scott Bryant, who was at the scene a short time after the wreck.

It was not immediately clear whether the driver was charged or what caused the crash. The Herald will publish more information as it becomes available.
