Event set for Thursday

Want to sample local cuisine from more than 35 restaurants and assist the community, too?

The 7th annual Tasting Statesboro event benefiting the United Way is set for Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. inside Ogeechee Technical College’s Natural Resources Building on 20 Joseph E. Kennedy Blvd.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event.

Bob Olliff, executive director of the United Way of Southeast Georgia, said the event has grown every year, changing locations several times as participation continued to increase.

“It’s a fun evening of food and fellowship and supporting the United Way and our member agencies,” Olliff said. “If you walk away hungry that night, you have nobody to blame but yourself.”

Though a few additional fundraisers take place throughout the year, Olliff said their signature Tasting event is “by far the biggest.”

Olliff spoke of other worthwhile causes in the community and said, “When people donate to an agency, they often have a face, somebody they know, a family member or friend, connected to that disease. Because of our broad reach with the United Way, that face can get lost.”

However, when Olliff states that in 2016, 30,000 individuals in Bulloch County were served by the United Way, the faces of those impacted are plentiful.

Agencies assisted with funding from the United Way of Southeast Georgia include: Area Christians Together in Service, American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts (Coastal Empire Council), Bulloch Alcohol and Drug Council, Bulloch Med Connection, Citizen Against Violence, Child Advocacy Services SEGA, Concerted Services, Family Literacy Initiative, Ferst Foundation, Food Bank, Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Hearts and Hands Clinic, Homebound Services, Family Library Literacy Services, Parent to Parent of Georgia, Prevent Child Abuse, and GSU Senior Companion.
