(Note: The following is part of a series of columns looking at the establishment and growth of doctors, hospitals and the health industry in Georgia and Bulloch County.) The Georgia Medical Society, organized on December 12, 1804, is both the first medical society in the state of Georgia and the oldest of what were referred to as "county" medical associations in the United States. In 1849, the Medical College of Georgia and 80 members of Savannah and Macon’s medical societies created an organization. In historical records, this group is referred to as both the Medical Association of Georgia and the Medical Society of the State of Georgia.
