A rendering of the remodeled and expanded Belk store at Statesboro Mall is shown above.

We have been watching the construction at the Statesboro Mall for months now, anxiously awaiting the "new" Belk to open. According to Darrell Williams, manager of corporate communications for Belk, Inc., building is almost complete and a move-in date has been established.
"We're scheduled to start moving into the new space on June 17 with the move taking place in phases over four days, so the addition is set to open on June 21," Williams said. "The first phase of the remodel of the existing store should be complete on about July 22."
Williams said the $3.6 million expansion and major renovation of its store at the Statesboro Mall will create a completely new shopping environment and allow Belk to expand its assortments of the latest fashion merchandise to meet the needs of customers in the Statesboro area.
"The current store will be expanded by 25,000 square feet to a total of approximately 97,000 square feet of space," Williams said. "Construction work on the expansion and remodeling will be completed this fall just prior to the store's grand re-opening on October 12, 2011. The store will remain open throughout the project."
The "old" store interior will be completely remodeled with new flooring, energy-efficient lighting and the latest display fixtures. The store's main exterior entrance and façade are also being renovated and refreshed. The expansion and remodeling will increase the size of the store's center core departments which include cosmetics, shoes, accessories and jewelry and will allow the store to offer a wider selection of women's and men's fashion apparel in other areas of the store. All restrooms, fitting rooms and customer convenience areas are also being remodeled.
"When construction is complete, our store will have a bright new decor with greatly expanded merchandise assortments in many areas," said Sandy Foskey, vice president and regional store manager. "We're adding 3,800 square feet of space in our ladies shoes department, nearly triple our current size. This, combined with our remodeled fashion jewelry, handbags, accessories and cosmetics areas, will give us a dynamic new center core.
"We're excited about these improvements which demonstrate our ongoing commitment to be the department store of choice in Statesboro." Foskey said. "Our new store will allow us to fulfill our mission to satisfy the Southern lifestyle needs of our customers like no one else and to deliver the fashion they desire and the value they deserve."
Belk will continue to operate its children's store in a separate building in the mall located adjacent to the main store.
Belk opened its first store in downtown Statesboro in 1950, and relocated to its present location in 1970. Charlotte, N.C.-based Belk, Inc. ( is the nation's largest privately owned department store company with 304 Belk stores located in 16 Southern states. The company was founded in 1888 by William Henry Belk in Monroe, N.C.
