Note: The following is part of a series of columns looking at the establishment and growth of doctors, hospitals and the health industry in Georgia and Bulloch County. On March 6, 1903, the Mayor and Council of Statesboro created the formal position of city physician and health officer to help cope with an outbreak of smallpox, and selected A.L.R. Avant as the man for the job. Everyone was to be vaccinated.
