(Note: The following is part of a series of columns looking at the establishment and growth of doctors, hospitals and the health industry in Georgia and Bulloch County.) In 1838, the Georgia Legislature chartered the new Savannah Medical College, but the faculty wasn’t organized until 1852. In 1853, the college was built on the corners of Habersham and Taylor Streets. The Right Rev. Stephen Elliott, of Savannah’s St. John’s Church and first Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia for the Episcopal Protestant Church, opened the first session of the new Savannah Medical College Nov. 7, 1853.
