With the retirement of podiatrist Dr. Robert W. Cushner, Atlantic Foot & Ankle Specialists has purchased his Family Podiatry Center and will now have two locations in Statesboro, but with different schedules.
Dr. Todd Newsom will now be the primary podiatrist providing care at Cushner's former office at 95 Bel-Air Drive.
Cushner sold his practice to Atlantic Foot & Ankle in order to ensure continued, quality podiatric care for his patients, he said. He opened Family Podiatry Center in April 1981, and so has seen to the foot health needs of patients here for more than 32 years.
"I'm happy to see that my patients will continue to have uninterrupted podiatric care," Cushner said. "With just a phone call all my patients can schedule their visits using the same phone number they have always used, and Atlantic Foot & Ankle will have all of their patient records on hand, to ensure continuity of care."
Cushner is only 59 but has retired for health reasons. Degenerative arthritis in his wrists leaves him unable to perform nerve surgeries and other delicate procedures that were an important part of his podiatry work, he explained in an interview. He underwent surgery on one wrist in December, and surgery on the other is scheduled soon.
So he does not know at this point whether he could eventually return to medical practice or what he will do in retirement.
"It's a fairly long recovery, so I don't know what lies ahead," Cushner said.
He added that he does have a new puppy, and he also mentioned the recent birth of his first grandchild, Ella. Cushner called Statesboro a great place to live and raise a family and said he will probably remain here in retirement.
He has four grown children, who now live in Statesboro, Savannah, Jackson Hole, Wy., and Washington, D.C. Ogeechee Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Joseph Cushner is one of his sons. The others are Will and Douglas. His daughter, Mallory, graduated from Georgia Southern University and is a registered nurse now working at Memorial Health University Medical Center.
Originally from Connecticut, Cushner completed his undergraduate studies at Boston University, then earned his doctorate at the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. He completed a hospital-based residency in podiatric surgery in Knoxville, Tenn., before moving to Statesboro to start his practice.
When he arrived he was the only podiatrist in town.

Through the acquisition of Family Podiatry Center, Atlantic Foot & Ankle Specialists gains potentially thousands of patients. Over the years, Cushner treated people from as far away as Brunswick and western South Carolina.
"Dr. Cushner has been in practice for 30 years now, and his patients were not really going to have anywhere to go, so we wanted to make sure, between the two of us, that he could find someone that would be reliable to take care of his patients as well as he did, and with us already having a local presence, we felt like it was a good fit," said Atlantic Foot & Ankle Specialists Practice Administrator Lucas Renfroe.
Dr. Todd Newsom and his wife, Dr. Melissa Robitaille, founded Foot & Ankle Specialists in Savannah in 2003. Today, the practice has offices in six locations, including Savannah, Hinesville, Pooler, Hardeeville, S.C., and now, two in Statesboro.
In all, five podiatrists and two certified pedorthists - professionals who fit patients with corrective footwear and supportive devices - see patients at these locations.
Newsom will be Cushner's most direct successor, seeing patients Mondays and Wednesdays at the office on Bel-Air Drive Drive. In addition, patients should feel free to be seen by Dr. Libby Putnam, another podiatrist with Atlantic Foot & Ankle Specialists, at their original Statesboro location at 110 Hill Pond Lane, the practice announced in a press release. The Hill Pond Lane office is open Tuesday through Friday, and patients may make an appointment by calling (912) 489-3668 to be scheduled at either Statesboro office. As Cushner noted, the practice also retains the Family Podiatry Center phone number, (912) 489-8727. Info on Atlantic Foot & Ankle and its doctors can be found at
