No foul play is suspected in the death of a Bulloch County Jail inmate, but an autopsy is pending.

Around 5:30 a.m. Monday, Jail Division deputies found a male inmate, Edelmiro Vasquez, 50, of Reidsville, not breathing, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said in a news release issued Monday afternoon.

"The inmate had last been observed at approximately 2:30 a.m. when jail deputies conducted headcount and observed him alive in his cell," Anderson said. "The supervising ... sergeant notified Bulloch EMS to respond" and contacted the jail captain, Chief Deputy Jared Akins and Anderson.

"Upon the arrival of EMS it was determined that (Vasquez) was deceased," the sheriff said. "Per jail protocol, the entire cellblock was locked down and the scene secured for processing."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was contacted and requested to conduct the investigation, also per sheriff's office policy, Anderson said.

The deceased was turned over to the coroner for transport to the GBI's Coastal Regional Crime Lab for autopsy.

Vasquez was being housed in the jail for another agency, Anderson said.

"As of this release foul play is not suspected; however, a final determination will not be reached until the autopsy is conducted and the GBI releases its report," the sheriff said.
