Boro resident hits Fantasy 5 jackpot
$287K winner chooses to remain anonymous
Georgia Lottery

Some lucky Statesboro resident is hundreds of thousands of dollars richer after winning the June 1 Fantasy 5 Georgia Lottery drawing.

According to Georgia Lottery media specialist Nia Roberts, the winner opted to remain anonymous, but local store owner Parth Thakore said he is excited for the person.

"I talked to all of my regulars," he said. "It wasn't one of them."

Someone entered T-Byrds convenience store on Lakeview Road last week and picked the winning numbers 2-12-19-27-30. They won $287,799, Roberts said.

Thakore said his store draws "a decent amount" of lottery customers, and he does wonder which customer picked the winning numbers. However, lottery winners are afforded the opportunity to remain anonymous and the lucky person chose to do so, Roberts said.

Unlike in the past, stores that sell winning Georgia lottery tickets no longer get a cut of the prize, according to Thakore. But he enjoys selling tickets anyway and gets excited for customers when they win.

"My lottery representative Sherri Chance works very hard and does a good job for us," he said.

Fantasy 5 tickets can be purchased at any Georgia Lottery retailer, through the Georgia Lottery app or online at www.georgialottery,com, Roberts said.

Since it began, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $19.5 billion to the state of Georgia for education.

"All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia's Pre-K Program," she said. "More than 1.6 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program."
