The eight core runners in the fifth annual Benning to Gordon Relay took to the road Thursday morning outside Fort Benning near Columbus, heading across Georgia to Fort Gordon near Augusta. This year's 250-mile trek, like last year's, raises money for the Fort Gordon Fisher House, where families stay free while soldiers are treated at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. If everything stays on schedule, the relay team should pass through Portal about 11 a.m. Saturday, said lead organizer and runner Ray Miller of Millen.
