Two men suspected in stealing more than two dozen golf cart and lawn mower batteries are behind bars, and several theft incidents were resolved through the arrests, Metter Police Chief Dennis Nelson said.

Anthony Devon Dekle, Jr., 21, and James Wright, 17, both of Metter, are suspected in numerous thefts that took place within the past week, Nelson said.

Both were charged with felony theft by taking and misdemeanor theft by taking. Wright was also charged with criminal trespass. Metter police Investigator Tim Platt said additional charges are possible.

"The thefts occurred at Dean's Golf Carts and Metter Paint and Body Shop on Cedar Street, and a private residence on Boston Street," Nelson said. "Items taken were over two dozen golf cart and lawn mower batteries. Two golf carts were also reported missing from Dean's Golf Carts, but only one has been recovered. No charges have been made regarding the stolen carts."

The missing golf cart is a green-and-white electric E-Z-GO model with knobby tires.

"We are fortunate to have these two individuals off the streets of Metter and thank our citizens for their tips and information," Nelson said. "Without the community's help, cases of this nature could potently go unsolved. We are also seeking help from the public in locating the missing golf cart."

The case is still under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Platt at (912) 685-5437 or
