Congressman John Barrow will be in Statesboro Saturday afternoon to discuss current issues with citizens interested in government activities.
The "Congress on the Corner" sessions are similar to the public forum near Tuscon, Ariz., last week where Congresswoman Gabriel Giffords was shot, six people killed and almost 20 others wounded.
Concerns over that incident are likely why Statesboro Police will be on hand during the "Congress on the Corner" event Saturday, said Statesboro Police Lt. Kaleb Moore.
There will be two officers present during Barrow's visit, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Statesboro Mall, he said. Mall officials "requested police presence."
The request for security is likely "a reflection of "the Tuscon shooting, he said. A 22-year-old Tucson man, Jared Lee Loughner, was charged in the shootings and arrested at the scene.
According to Barrow's website, (barrow.house.gov), "Congress on the Corner" is an opportunity to visit one-on-one" with Barrow to discuss issues important to citizens.
Barrow hosts the meetings across Georgia's 12th District throughout the year and addresses problems citizens may experience with government agencies, such as the Social Security Administration, Medicare, or the Veteran's Administration.
Citizens are encouraged to participate, according to the site.
The day's events Saturday will begin with Barrow holding a gathering at his office in Savannah from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; followed by a meeting with citizens at Lovett Hardware in Rincon from 11:30 a.mm to 1230 p.m.; at Harvey's Supermarket in Sylvania form 130 to 230 p.m., and then in the center court of the Statesboro Mall at 3:30 p.m.
