Looking for folks that love bargains, Karen Franklin is expecting a larger than usual crowd for Saturday's annual Statesboro Service League Attic Sale at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds.
The entry fee is $2 and the sale opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 11 a.m.
A member of the Service League since 2004, Franklin decided two years ago to volunteer as chairman for the enormous garage sale. She is being assisted by co-chair Amy Taulbee.
"The Attic Sale conjures up good thoughts for me It always amazes me that in one week's time our ladies in the League can transform an empty warehouse building into a large department store," Franklin said.
With each of the 100 members bringing $200 worth of items, the 37th annual Attic Sale has blossomed into a well-oiled machine. The template is perfected each year as different League members generate better ideas. A Facebook fan page was created this year to allow Statesboro residents to learn more about the sale.
"The sale brings out the best in a lot of our members. It's the one event that the entire League works on together," Franklin said. "We come together, get to know each other, have fun, work hard, and get tired."
"Women and children who need our help in the community benefit from our only fundraiser," said Franklin. "It's a tough week for many of the League members who work full time, have children and are already extremely busy. But we persevere because we think about the women and children we have helped in the past."
The Attic Sale is held each fall and is the only fundraiser for the Service League. All of the proceeds are returned to the community. Since 1973, Statesboro Service League members have volunteered in the community. League projects currently supported include: Safe Haven, Joseph's Home for Boys, Averitt Center for the Arts, Foster Care, Camp Gateway/Gateway Girls, Kids Closet, sight/hearing screenings in all local schools, and Henry the Hand Handwashing education program.
