Several companies and individuals received accolades and appreciation Tuesday as the American Diabetes Association  hosted an awards luncheon at the Statesboro Inn for those who supported the 16th annual fall fund raising campaign.
The campaign exceeded its goal of $84,000, said ADA Director Maria Center. The campaign raised about $93,000, but Chairman Mark Hynko  hoped to raise $100,000 and promised to shave his head  if the goal was met.  He left the meeting with a full head of hair, but with the satisfaction of knowing that under his leadership the actual goal was surpassed.
"We've had a wonderful year," he said. "It took a lot of individuals, a lot of companies, and a lot of hard work."
As someone who suffers from type 2 diabetes, Hynko shared his experiences and said "It really does hit home."
The luncheon "recognizes the efforts of sponsors, team captains, and special event organizers whose various fund raisers contributed to the success of the 2007 campaign," Center said.
“Elite Feet” teams that raised over $1,000 were recognized.  The captain of the top fund raising team - Penny Harris - received two free AirTran tickets to any U.S. destination.
Local eateries that participated in the  “Restaurant Wars”  were also honored. The top fund raising restaurant team leader, Liz Williams of Daylight Donuts, won a weekend for two in Savannah and $350 worth of free advertising from various media outlets, she said.
"Several successful special events were held in support of the campaign, " she said. These included Ducks for Diabetes, two golf tournaments, and a dove shoot.  Organizers of those events were honored as well.
Funds raised during the Statesboro campaign fund the mission of ADA, to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes, she said.
Hynko also announced the 2008 campaign chairman will be  Bulloch County Assistant School Superintendent Charles Wilson.
"What a hard act to follow," Wilson said. "I'm really impressed with the campaign. This is pretty serious business and all you guys go about (raising money) in your own fun way. I am looking forward to a fun year."
