An abandoned house was destroyed by fire Tuesday night on West Jones Avenue at Institute Street. Statesboro firefighters are investigating the cause, said Statesboro fire Lt. Derek Stoddard.

Around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, the Statesboro Fire Department responded to the fire with first units arriving a minute after receiving the call. They found a single-story home with visible smoke and flames showing.

Firefighters “knocked back flames that were rolling out of the windows, from under the roof, and also from under the raised floor, which allowed them to make entry,” he said.

Crews remained on scene for another hour to overhaul the house in order to ensure there was no more spread or extension of fire. Bulloch County Fire provided automatic aid with the structure fire, and Statesboro PD and the SFD CAFE Unit were also on scene to provide support, he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
