A century of life and still going strong
Kiwanis Club honors member Leland Riggs
W 063016 RIGGS 100th 01
Leland Riggs, center left, is all smiles as State Court Judge Gary Mikell lights a birthday cake and fellow Kiwanians wave sparklers while celebrating Riggs' 100th birthday Thursday.
In 1916, on the last day of June, a man was born who would make a great impact on others throughout his life. A grocery business owner, a truck stop and service station entrepreneur, and the man who ran Georgia Southern University’s first post office was also one of the driving forces behind one of Statesboro’s most successful and well-known civic clubs, the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro. Leland Riggs turned 100 Thursday, and the club honored him with a cake and cupcakes, sparklers, a rendition of “Happy Birthday” and a framed copy of a 2014 Statesboro Herald article that highlighted his service to the organization.
