Two men caught with a variety of illegal drugs were arrested after an officer smelled marijuana in the suspects' car and called for assistance from a K-9 officer.

Around 8:30 p.m. April 2, Statesboro-Bulloch County Drug Suppression Team Deputy 1st Class Randall Norman stopped a vehicle on Highway 301 South for an equipment violation and "smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle," said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.

The driver, Joseph Mathis, 22, of Jackson Road, and a passenger, Link Ridgeway, 43, of Abercorn Avenue in Atlanta, were taken into custody after a K-9 unit "alerted on the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed several separate types of illegal drugs," Anderson said.

Both Mathis and Ridgeway were transported to the Bulloch County Jail and charged with defective headlight, possession of marijuana, possession/use of a drug-related object, possession of cocaine, possession of a schedule I controlled substance (marijuana "wax"), possession of psilocybin (mushrooms) and possession of MDMA (Ecstasy).

Both were denied bond and remain in jail pending further judicial action, Anderson said.
