Patriots Day celebration held at Nevils
Pre-K teacher Caroline Murphy and students Brayden Wells, left, and Macy Riggs give guest speaker Sgt. Mark Gaurino of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office a big round of applause during Wednesday's Patriots Day ceremony at Nevils Elementary School.

As Americans remembered the events of Sept. 11, 2001 all over the country Wednesday, students gathered at Nevils Elementary School for a Patriots Day ceremony, honoring the military and first responders.

Students performed musical numbers during the program, and Sgt. Mark Gaurino of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office spoke to students about his life with his K-9 partner, Gismo.

Principal Nate Pennington reminded students of the sacrifices made by the military and first responders, who keep everyone in the community safe.

Lt. Col. Bill Edenfield of the Georgia Air National Guard, far right, stands at attention with other invited members of the military, veterans and first responders as the national anthem is played during Wednesday's ceremony.
