Clyde Akins Cannon celebrates her 100th birthday on October 19, 2006. She was born and raised in Bulloch County, the fourth of 10 children and the only one living today. At age 18, she married the late Jesse Lewis “Pete” Cannon and has been a homemaker and caretaker all of her life. She is a charter member of the Middleground Homemaker’s Club, which still meets today. She has a loving and caring personality that makes her very special. She is known in her community for her wonderful cooking. She still cooks full meals with fried chicken, rice, gravy and biscuits. She has always been very involved in her church. She has two children, Myrtis C. Murphy of Springfield, Va., and Richard L. Cannon of Statesboro; four grandchildren, Mona M. Murphy of Blacksburg, Va., Barbara Miller of Burnsville, N.C., Gary Murphy of Houston, Texas, and Leah Cannon Barren of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Garrett Murphy and Hunter Barren. Ms. Cannon’s children and grandchildren invite friends and family to a Drop-In Birthday Reception to be held in her honor on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Honey Bowen Building on Fair Road in Statesboro. No gifts, please.
