Elementary students participate in July 4th coloring contest

    Sea Island Bank and the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department are excited to announce the winners of the 2014 Firecracker Fest’s “Every Heart Beats True for the Red, White and Blue” coloring contest. Three local community members judged more than 450 entries last week to select this year’s winners.
    Drawings were chosen for first, second and third place overall as well as most creative, most colorful and most patriotic. Winners also were chosen from each elementary school grade level (kindergarten through fifth).
    Hanna Lee, a fourth-grader at Mill Creek Elementary, won first-place overall, and her work will be used as the official artwork for the Firecracker Fest. Katelyn Varner, a fourth-grader at Julia P. Bryant Elementary, placed second, and Kayla Arnett, a fifth-grader at Sallie Zetterower Elementary, placed third. Ansley Groom, a third-grader at Mill Creek Elementary, won most colorful. Nia Melton, a fourth-grader from Nevils Elementary, won most creative, and Katelyn Varner, a fourth-grader at Julia P. Bryant Elementary, won most patriotic.
    In each grade level’s competition, the winners included Jayden Griner, a kindergartener at Nevils Elementary; Emma Grace Lowe, a first-grader at Brooklet Elementary; Anna Torrence, a second-grader at Stilson Elementary; Kendall Speer, a third-grader at Trinity Christian; Helen Piltner, a fourth-grader at Julia P. Bryant Elementary; and Dijanay Gantt, a fifth-grader at Julia P. Bryant Elementary.
    All winners received prizes sponsored by Sea Island Bank and the SBCPRD. First-place overall winner Lee was awarded $100, four daily passes to Splash in the Boro and a Sea Island Bank T-shirt, as well as the opportunity to have her design featured on the marketing materials for the 2014 Firecracker Fest. Second-place overall winner Varner received $50, one daily pass to Splash in the Boro and a Sea Island Bank T-shirt, and third-place overall winner Arnett was awarded $25, one daily pass to Splash in the Boro and a Sea Island Bank T-shirt.
    Winners from each grade and the most colorful, most creative and most patriotic winners received goody bags from Sea Island Bank and Splash in the Boro at the winners’ reception.
    The Firecracker Fest, sponsored by Sea Island Bank and many other local organizations, will be held Friday, July 4, from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m. There will be music, entertainment, games, competitions and the firework show finale.
