Notable Notions with Linsay Rudd - Get behind Team USA

United States' Jermaine Jones (13) celebrates with teammates after scoring his side's first goal during the Group G World Cup soccer match between the U.S. and Portugal at the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus, Brazil, Sunday.

I don’t know much about soccer. No hands, two goalies, lots and lots of running — that’s about the extent of my knowledge.
It’s not that I don’t care about the sport; I usually can get pretty riled up about almost anything that requires a showdown between two teams fighting for a win, and most importantly — let’s be real here — some serious bragging rights.
My ignorance may be rooted in my childhood: I was more of a rec softball kind of girl, and I avoided signing up for any sport that required a ridiculous amount of running and/or lung exertion (i.e., soccer). Because of that, I missed out on learning the basics of the game when I was younger. Combine that with being raised on a steady helping of mostly football, baseball and basketball, and I guess you could call me an official Soccer Idiot.
Thankfully, I haven't let my stupidity about the sport stop me from tagging along for Team USA's World Cup ride over the past couple of weeks. Ups, downs, drama, injuries — this American girl has gotten caught up in it all.
After an exciting win over Ghana and a frustrating tie with Portugal, the U.S. will face its fourth and final competitor in Group G when it goes head-to-head with Germany Thursday. Locally, Carmike Theater will show the game on the big screen, and admission is free. (Click here for more information.)
Even Soccer Idiots like me can appreciate an opportunity like that.
    Go USA!
