Local Habitat for Humanity names a new director

Robin Diaz

Bulloch County Habitat for Humanity is welcoming a new director to lead the charity organization, and Robin Diaz hopes to continue helping less fortunate citizens to become owners of their own homes.

Having been a grant writer for the Indian River, Fla., Habitat for Humanity and executive director for The Source, a homeless mission and property manager for Campus Crusade for Christ, Diaz  “brings a wealth of experience to her new role,” said Marcus Toole, resource development coordinator for the Bulloch County Habitat for Humanity.

The Board of Directors of Bulloch Habitat selected Diaz to serve as executive director effective Oct. 30. She succeeds Linda Christy, who served the affiliate for four years, he said.

Diaz, who had been in office only a week when she spoke to the Statesboro Herald Wednesday, said “I am in the process of switching gears.” She took the position with Bulloch County’s Habitat for Humanity because, while working with the homeless ministry, she realized that once a homeless person was helped and found gainful employment, they still faced the problem of not being able to find affordable housing.

The focus of Habitat for Humanity is to build affordable homes, with the help from the home’s proposed owners, thus providing better living and home ownership opportunities for those with lower incomes.

“We need more affordable housing and that’s where I wanted to be,” she said. People on minimum wage “can’t afford rent, and we need to do something more” to help them. I wanted to go back to Habitat – that is where I saw more lives changed.”

The Bulloch County Habitat board of directors anticipates Diaz will bring enthusiasm for helping others to continue the organization’s traditions. Her “passion for changing lives, her knowledge of the organization and vision for the future will serve us well as we work together with our partners and volunteers to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter,” Toole said.

Diaz said she is still learning the community, but sees an opportunity for focus on the Statesboro’s Blue Mile District, which encompasses low-income families and some inferior housing.

Diaz was awarded an MBA from the University of Central Florida in 2014.  She is married, with adult children and three grandchildren.

Linda Christy “is retiring from her position to spend more time with family, but will temporarily help with mortgage servicing,” Toole said. She will volunteer with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore (where donated goods are sold to help fund the Habitat mission), he said. “The board of directors and staff of Habitat Bulloch want to personally thank Linda for her faithful service to our mission and wish her the very best in her future endeavors.”
