Multiple charges after bus chase

Lewis Dean Martin

A shoplifting suspect who led law enforcement on a three-county chase Wednesday while driving an older model school bus, is charged with fleeing and attempting to elude, as well as shoplifting, said Toombs County Sheriff Alvie (Junior) Kight.

Lewis Dean Martin of Eustis, Fla., also faces a number of pending charges from the Georgia State Patrol, who assisted in the chase that spanned from Toombs County to Candler County.

Martin, 59, was spotted around 2 p.m. Wednesday stealing several grills from a Dollar General Market in Lyons and leaving the scene in an older model white school bus, he said. Toombs County sheriff’s deputies and Lyons police gave chase, but Martin would not stop.

Martin went to Cobbtown, then to Metter, where he got onto Interstate 16. Still fleeing from pursuing law enforcement, he crossed the median several times, changing directions, sometimes traveling as slow as 40 miles per hour. He left the interstate at least twice, driving into Metter, but returning back to the interstate. Troopers with blue lights flashing flanked the bus, but Martin did not stop until a GSP trooper fired shots and flattened the bus tires.

The pursuit involved Toombs, Candler and Tattnall County sheriff’s deputies;  Lyons and Metter police, and Georgia State Patrol troopers.

Martin was arrested and taken to the Toombs County Detention Center. Georgia State Patrol Post 45 Commander Sgt. First-Class Chris Rodewolt said Martin faces a “long list” of charges from GSP stemming from the chase, but a complete list of charges was unavailable Thursday.
