Double trouble

Benjamin Allen Roberts

A Brooklet man who was arrested for assaulting another man and stealing his vehicle Saturday found more trouble after he attacked an inmate at the Bulloch County Jail, breaking his jaw.

Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown said Benjamin Allen Roberts, 33, of J.W. Lane Road in Brooklet, was riding with a woman and another man Saturday near Clito when an argument ensued. Roberts, who was riding in the back seat of the vehicle, wanted the driver to take him to Atlanta, Brown said.

The driver refused, so Roberts began "punching him in the head," he said.

The attack forced the victim to leave the roadway in a "minor accident," and the two got out of the vehicle, where Roberts continued to strike the victim with the handle of a machete, Brown said. The victim was not cut.

Then Roberts got back into the vehicle and fled with the female passenger, leaving the victim "on the side of the road," he said.

A short time later, Roberts was apprehended, and deputies found him with a smoking device in his possession. He was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, theft by taking motor vehicle, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission or attempt of felonies, possession and use of drug-related objects, and driving while license is suspended or revoked.

Roberts was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where Bulloch County sheriff's Investigator Prethenia Cone continued the investigation, conducting interviews with the witness and victim. But while Roberts was being detained in a cell, he became involved in an altercation with another inmate, fighting him physically and breaking the inmate's jaw, Brown said.

That led to another charge of aggravated battery, as well as a charge of riot in a penal institution, Brown said.

Roberts is being held without bond pending further investigation and court hearings, he said.
