Businessman charged again with insurance fraud

Marvin Lewis Deal Jr.

A Statesboro businessman was arrested Tuesday for the second time in four years on charges of insurance fraud.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agents have charged Marvin Lewis Deal Jr. of Joe Robert Tillman Road with four counts of insurance fraud and one count of theft by deception, said Joshua Ayer, assistant special agent-in-charge of the Statesboro Region 5 GBI office.

The Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office requested the GBI’s assistance in January regarding the insurance fraud investigation, Ayer said.

This investigation was “concerning allegations that (Deal) was allegedly selling extended warranties for heating and air conditioning units sold by his company (Eagle Heating and Air), and not honoring those warranties,” he said. The alleged incidents took place between 2007 and 2016.

At the time of his arrest Tuesday, Deal, 45, was still on probation stemming from an indictment for similar charges four years ago.

In March 2013, a state insurance investigator and the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office launched an investigation into allegations that Deal filed false insurance claims.

At the time, Deal turned himself in to the Bulloch County Jail after a special presentation in court.

In that case, he was accused of — and pled guilty to — insurance fraud and felony theft by deception.

Glenn Allen, spokesman for the Georgia Fire and Insurance Commission, said then that Deal was involved in “claims fraud” in which he had filed insurance claims on work he did not perform.

For those charges, Deal was sentenced to five years of probation, 180 to 240 days in a detention center, a $1,000 fine and $27,928 in restitution for the charge of theft by deception.

He was also sentenced to five years of probation, to run concurrently, for the insurance fraud charges.

Deal is currently being held without bond in the Bulloch County Jail pending court hearings regarding the recent charges, said Bulloch County sheriff’s Capt. Todd P. Hutchens.
