UPDATE: Suspect arrested in bar beating

Grant James Spencer

Statesboro police arrested a man Thursday evening charged in an aggravated assault incident which left another man in critical condition.Cpl. Justin Samples, spokesman for the Statesboro Police Department, could not confirm reports late Thursday night that Michael Gatto, 18, address unavailable, had died. He did confirm, however, that Grant James Spencer, 20, was taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault in connection to the attack that resulted in Gatto being transported to a Savannah hospital.

Gatto was found at Rude Rudy's, unresponsive, just after midnight Thursday, he said.

Gatto was transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center and later flown to Memorial in Savannah, he said. Gatto was listed Thursday afternoon as being in critical condition.

Officers interviewed witnesses and took a report for the incident before turning it over to the department's Criminal Investigations Bureau. Investigators later secured a warrant for Spencer's arrest.
