Screven baseball advances to Elite Eight
SYLVANIA — It seems that for the Screven County Gamecocks, the keys to winning in the playoffs are tight defense, well-conditioned pitching and six-run innings.     Twice in Wednesday’s doubleheader, SCHS got into early trouble but put together six-run rallies in the fourth and third innings respectively to sweep the Appling County Pirates and advance to the Elite Eight of the GHSA Class AA state playoffs.     Each batter reached at least once in both games, Screven turned four double plays and Cameron Hayden and Jack Frankhouser both went the distance in the sweep.     “I couldn’t ask for ...

Devils face Beckham, Bears in round two
Statesboro will try and continue its impressive run through postseason play, traveling to Griffin today for the second round of the GHSA Class AAAA playoffs.     The Blue Devils (15-12) are 9-3 in their last 12 with five of those wins coming in the region and state playoffs.     The road to a state title goes up a notch today, though, as SHS will face a team with one of the top prep prospects in the country — Tim Beckham.     Beckham — the brother of Georgia Southern second baseman Jeremy Beckham — is the No. 1 rated high school ...

Braves plit doubleheader with Bucks
PITTSBURGH — Tim Hudson limited Pittsburgh to two hits and an unearned run over seven innings and the Atlanta Braves halted their seven-game road losing streak and the Pirates’ six-game winning streak with an 8-1 victory Monday in the second game of a doubleheader.     In the opener, Freddy Sanchez hit a three-run double and Zach Duke pitched six shutout innings as the Pirates won 5-0.     With Mark Kotsay and Brian McCann driving in three runs each, Atlanta avoided its first four-game sweep by Pittsburgh since Sept. 1-3, 1978. Weekly Whatup, 5/12
G’day my rowdy readers. Hope everyone had a lovely Mother’s Day.     Growing up, my good mum had to put up with a lot of nonsense. Me being the sports nut that I was — and still am — it would take countless hours explaining to her why I needed to stay up way past my bedtime to watch whatever sporting event was on that night.     Who knows how many hours she spent driving me God knows where to let me participate in whatever flavor-of-the-month sport I had become fond of.     To make it worse — my ...

LOCAL ROUNDUP: Claxton's hopes crushed in late-inning collapse
CLAXTON — Baconton Charter scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Claxton in a wild finish Saturday in the first round of the GHSA Class AA state baseball playoffs.     Zac Mosley hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to put the Tigers (20-5) up 6-0. The lead wouldn’t hold.     The Blazers came back to tie the game, then eventually win it with two outs. Baconton will move in, traveling to Pacelli or hosting Turner County. Gators sent home by Piedmont     MONTICELLO — Bulloch Academy fell 10-5 in Game Two ...

Devils breeze into second round of state
Put simply — Statesboro obliterated Bainbridge Friday night in the first round of the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs.     The Blue Devils (15-12) pounded BHS 28-3 after a 15-0 Game Two win, compiling 26 hits over the course of a doubleheader. The two squads only played 10 innings due to the mercy rule being enforced in both games. By the time the night was over, few would remember the Bearcats actually led 2-0 after half an inning in Game One.     “I hope we save some for the next round,” quipped SHS coach Chris Bishop afterwards.     Statesboro ...

Local Roundup: Screven County sweeps Berrian, Claxton splits with Baconton
The Screven County Gamecocks swept Berrian County Friday in a double header to advance to the second round of the GHSA Class AA state playoffs.     Allowing five runs in the first three innings, Gamecock starting pitcher Jack Frankhouser closed out Berrian with authority, racking up nine strikeouts and allowing just two hits in the final four frames. He finished with 10 K’s and allowed three earned runs in the 7-5 Screven win.     Jon rash went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs in game one, Garrett Bates was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Walker Stuart drove in one and crossed ...
