Screven baseball advances to Elite Eight SYLVANIA — It seems that for the Screven County Gamecocks, the keys to winning in the playoffs are tight defense, well-conditioned pitching and six-run innings. Twice in Wednesday’s doubleheader, SCHS got into early trouble but put together six-run rallies in the fourth and third innings respectively to sweep the Appling County Pirates and advance to the Elite Eight of the GHSA Class AA state playoffs. Each batter reached at least once in both games, Screven turned four double plays and Cameron Hayden and Jack Frankhouser both went the distance in the sweep. “I couldn’t ask for ... |

Weekly Whatup, 5/12 G’day my rowdy readers. Hope everyone had a lovely Mother’s Day. Growing up, my good mum had to put up with a lot of nonsense. Me being the sports nut that I was — and still am — it would take countless hours explaining to her why I needed to stay up way past my bedtime to watch whatever sporting event was on that night. Who knows how many hours she spent driving me God knows where to let me participate in whatever flavor-of-the-month sport I had become fond of. To make it worse — my ... |

The two squads only played 10 innings due to the mercy rule being enforced in both games. By the time the night was over, few would remember the Bearcats actually led 2-0 after half an inning in Game One. “I hope we save some for the next round,” quipped SHS coach Chris Bishop afterwards. Statesboro ... |
