Portal/Metter Highway will be closed beginning Monday, Nov. 9, for bridge replacement, according to spokespersons form the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The portion of the road to be closed is from Rosemary Church Road in Candler County to Westside Road in Bulloch County.
This closure is necessary to complete the removal and replacement of the two bridges at Big Branch and Lott's Creek at the Bulloch / Candler County line. However, sections of the road will remain open for local traffic only.
Travelers in both Candler and Bulloch County will be utilizing Rosemary Church Road, U.S. 80 and Ga. 121 as the signed detour route. Regular commuter traffic between Portal and Metter is advised to use Ga. 121 and U.S. 80.
According to DOT representatives, the full project includes construction of bridges and approaches on Portal/Metter Highway over Little Stocking Head Creek, over Big Branch and over Lott's Creek. Funding is provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), and was awarded to Gregory Bridge Company of Eatonton, for $3,064,569.68. The project is expected to be completed by winter 2011.
Work on the Little Stocking Head Creek Bridge is underway and the existing signed detour utilizing Rosemary Church Road & Union Road is still in effect for this site.
Motorists are advised to slow down and use extra caution in the work zone. Citizens may contact the local Area Engineers office at (912) 871-1103 for project specific information.
