It was Election Day Tuesday and, appropriately enough, the lone guest “Mornings UnPhiltered” was Bulloch County Chief Probate Clerk Patricia Lanier Jones.
One of Jones’ responsibilities is helping mange local elections.
Bulloch County was contracted to serve as Election Superintendent for Statesboro’s mayoral and city council election. The City of Statesboro asked the Bulloch voting office to step in and run the election, while new City Clerk Sue Starling learns the election procedures.
Jones said there are no county elections going on. Portal and Brooklet are having city elections, while candidates in Register were all unopposed so no election was necessary.
Jones explained to host Phil Boyum that polling managers are responsible for closing down and locking up the machines, which are then be transported to the Bulloch County Courthouse, where Jones and her election workers will begin tabulating the votes. Since there are three candidates in each of the city council races, Jones said a candidate must receive 50 percent plus one of the number of votes cast in order to avoid a runoff. Jones said the election has been pretty quiet as there are just two contested races in Statesboro.
After speaking with Jones, the music of Chris Stevers was showcased briefly by Boyum. Interviewed in Connect Statesboro recently, Stevers said he moved to Hilton Head after playing with the Atlanta Band “Southern Bred.” He plays his original music in Hilton Head clubs. Raised in Fayetteville, in Fayette County, Stevers also worked as a deputy sheriff for 15 years until he moved to Hilton Head.
