Screven County’s high octane ground game churned out 352 yards and the Gamecock defense was dominating, as Screven beat Laney, the No. 6-ranked AA team in the state, 21-12, Friday in Sylvania.

After a scoreless first quarter, Travis Coles capped a 60-yard, 12-play drive for Screven with a four-yard run 20 seconds into the second quarter. Cameron Abraham had the key play on the drive, scampering 13 yards on a third and 11 call.

The Gamecocks went ahead 14-0 four minutes before halftime, finishing another methodical drive with a six-yard run by Todd Scott. The drive covered 51 yards on 12 plays. Quarterback Michael Johnson converted a fourth and one with a six-yard run.

It looked like Screven would put the game away on its first possession of the second half, driving 50 yards to the Laney 13. But Laney defensive back Cameron Stallings intercepted a bobbled pass at the seven and returned it 93 yards for a touchdown.

Leading 14-6 early in the fourth quarter, Abraham put Screven in full command with a 40-yard scoring run at the 9:24 mark of the fourth quarter. Abraham, a junior, had his most productive game of his career with 122 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Coles finished with 94 yards on 20 carries. Johnson ran for 79 yards on 13 carries, and Scott had 53 yards on 13 carries.

Screven’s defense held Laney to 150 total yards. Travis Sampson picked off a pass for the Gamecock defense.

Screven improves to 4-2, 2-1 in Region 3-AA. The Gamecocks play at Josey Friday night.
